The mission of the Academy of Environmental Science Inc. is to provide a quality ecologically based education program through a rigorous and relevant hands-on curriculum for students.

The growing worldwide interest in environmental stewardship attracts high school students, interested in science careers, to the Academy of Environmental Science. Citrus County has one of the few remaining underdeveloped, protected coastlines in the state of Florida, with miles of rivers and aquatic wetlands.

A Citrus County School Board-initiated charter school, the Academy was founded in 1999 through a partnership with numerous individuals, organizations, and agencies, working to protect our precious environment. Students attending the Academy develop awareness and appropriate stewardship of our environment and natural resources, while focusing on environmental careers.

The location of the Academy provides a unique learning opportunity for students, as many of the lessons are uniquely designed to be taught outdoors. Under the guidance of highly qualified instructors, students from grades 9-12 encounter the environment first-hand through exploration, discovery, and research projects, in cooperation with environmental organizations and post-secondary institutions.

The objective of the Academy of Environmental Science is to provide each student with a complete academic curriculum, in the fields of science and language arts, and to provide the basic skills necessary for careers in environmental sciences.
